Music Notes from the Elementary Chair
Angela Wickham
I hope everyone’s school year is off to a wonder start! The Southeast District Elementary Clinic and Concert will be held on January the 17th at Burlington High School, 830 Cross Street. Registration will begin at 8:30 am, with rehearsals to begin at 9:00 am. The concert will, again, be held in the gymnasium at 3:30 pm. Students should dress comfortably for rehearsals and bring concert clothing to change into before the performance.
All fees will be paid on or before the day of the event. Fees this year are $4.00 per student, a $0.50 increase from the previous year. Registration will be due no later than November the 25th. Remember that participants should be chosen from your top 5th and 6th grade singers. Let’s keep it to 8 singers per school unless you have multiple elementary buildings in your district, then each school can select 6 students to attend. Divide the parts equally among your students to insure a balanced sound within the group. Please include a count for lunch in the hospitality room on your registration form. Burlington H.S. will provide a delicious meal to adults (sponsors, teachers, administrators, bus drivers, etc.) in the hospitality room.
Our clinician this year will be Terry Barham, Ph. D., Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Emporia State University. Dr. Barham is the author of Strategies for Teaching Junior High and Middle School Male Singers—Master Teachers Speak, and the co-author of The Boy’s Changing Voice—New Solutions For Today’s Choral Teacher. He has toured Europe six times directing Emporia State University’s A Cappella Choir. His choirs have been invited to sing at the KMEA State Convention several times. He has conducted several All-State Junior High level choirs including: North Carolina, Alabama, Missouri and Florida. He is known nation-wide as a presenter, clinician, director and teacher. I feel fortunate that our students will have the opportunity to perform under his instruction.
